The drive from Santo Domingo is about 4-5 hours. Options include a private transfer for comfort, a rental car for flexibility, or a public bus (like Caribe Tours) to Pedernales. Contact us, and we can help arrange the best transport option for your group to ensure a smooth journey to the stunning southwest.
Pedernales and Cabo Rojo are generally considered very safe, with a low crime rate and a welcoming local community. As with any travel, exercise standard precautions: secure your valuables and be aware of your surroundings. Our experienced local guides ensure your safety and comfort throughout your tour, allowing you to relax and enjoy the region's stunning natural beauty without worry.
The dry, sunny climate makes Cabo Rojo a year-round destination. The peak season from December to April offers slightly cooler weather and is the most popular time. For fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of May or November. While the official hurricane season is June-October, the arid southwest typically sees less rainfall than other parts of the Dominican Republic, making it a great option even then.
The most reliable ATMs and banks are in Pedernales town, about a 20-minute drive from the Cabo Rojo area. Outside of Pedernales, cash access is very limited. We recommend withdrawing enough Dominican Pesos (DOP) in Pedernales or a larger city beforehand. While many tours accept USD or cards for final payment, having local currency for small purchases, tips, and local eateries is highly advised.
Mobile phone coverage from major providers like Claro and Altice is generally good in Pedernales town and parts of Cabo Rojo. However, in more remote areas like Bahía de las Águilas or the national parks, the signal can be weak or non-existent. Most hotels and some restaurants offer Wi-Fi, but it may not be as fast as you're used to. It's a great opportunity to disconnect and enjoy nature.
Our tours are designed for a hassle-free experience. Most full-day excursions include round-trip transport from your Cabo Rojo or Pedernales hotel/port, park entrance fees, a delicious Dominican lunch with beverages, and a professional, multilingual guide. Specifics for each tour, like boat rides or snorkel gear, are detailed on the individual tour pages. You just need to bring your personal items and camera!
